gravel instead of landscaping in eastlake?! 15 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 2
Long time reader . . first time poster

I am a Eastlake resident living on Coralville, and my neighbor just informed that instead of a landscaped green space on our street, (across from the Richmond Paseo homes) workers- as I type_ are installing a 14 foot wide gap of gravel road base instead. What gives?! Not only it is an eyesore and will probably encourage traffic on the space ( because it will look like a road.)but it does not continue the green space planned across the street.

Does anyone know anything about this?

My husband and I walked past the other day and noticed that too. Hate to tell you, but it appears an alley access is going in. They had the utilities set up to be moved, and it appeared curb cuts would be made soon. 14' would be the right size too... not to mention, road base is rarely used for landscaping. Crushed concrete is frequently used in the aggregate which isn't very appealing, among many other reasons. Either way, you can bet that there will be cars there rather than green space!

Thanks for the info- that does make sense.

What doesn't make sense is that Coralville is such a small street to begin with, it doesn't seem necessary! Maybe it is in prep for the empty home sites behind our street across from the lake.

With the lots there, that would seem to be the only reason to put another access in but at the same time, there are much higher density alley ways in other parts of the neighborhood so I can't really figure out their reasoning for doing it. I would much rather see green space there just for the view when we take our dog on a walk!

Sorry, Littleash, but apparently I was wrong. They had the utilities dug up but ended up filling it all back in so I wonder what caused that decision. The gravel is awful looking and I don't see the point of it other than a potential for a future alley (???). I do like the trees but hopefully they'll do something with the area so that it doesn't stay gravel forever!

I walked on that pathway and I don't think it looks all that bad. Different, but not bad. It was difficult to walk on and I sank into the gravel with each step. A bike would be hard to ride - the bike tracks I saw were deep. I am assuming the gravel will settle with time. No large vehicle could get through that space because of the big rocks strategically placed. I wonder if they will alter the "landscaping" once homes are built on each side of the path. If you stand at the entrance (on Oquirrh Lake Road) the view is a non-obstructed straight shot almost all the way to Fern Ridge - kinda cool. I wonder how they will clear the path when snow season arrives? You can't really shovel snow on top of gravel.

I had to look twice when I walked past the empty lot that once housed the playground by the Eastlake model homes. I'm curious if that is one lot or two - I guess it depends on which builder owns it.
