I was out walking my dog this morning, the day after Fizz Fest, and could not believe the vandalism I saw. There are 6” to 8” vertical pipes in the ground over by the dam and spillway with drop on metal covers. The covers have been stolen. Several of the trail lights along the route I took had the glass broken out of them. There is a sprinkler control box on the island with the cover missing and the wiring has been pulled out. Bolts have been removed from the spiral bridge leaving boards flapping in the wind. There is also paintball debris covering the path.

As popular as Oquirrh Lake and other Daybreak amenities have become with those outside of Daybreak, it is clear that the Salt Lake valley does not have enough open space. But when I see all the vandalism and unwillingness of people to follow the rules, I understand why these amenities are scarce. The fees paid by the residents repair, maintain, and pay for security of the amenities regardless of who the vandals are or where they live. Is it time to post "NO TRESPASSING" signs around the amenities and restrict their use to Daybreak residents and their invited guests? Should it all be turned over to the city so that the cost of maintenance can be spread out? Or is this fine, the cost we pay is the price of living close to these amenities? I’d like your opinions.

I just got home from the lake and was about to start a similar thread. I was out at the north end, and the porta potty was overturned and there were at least a dozen lights with broken glass. Sadly, this is a recurring problem, and the residents are the ones that get to pay the bill. What's worse, I would bet the the majority of the damage is not done by "outsiders" but by the unsupervised darlings that live right here in Daybreak. Unless something has changed, we are supposed to be paying for additional security from off-duty police officers. I haven't seen them around in quite a while, though. I'm not sure what the answer is, but maybe we need to step up the patrols (most of the damage seems to happen on Saturday nights), add some CCTV cameras, impose a lake curfew, etc. None of these are ideal, but we can't keep paying thousands and thousands of dollars to repair the damage.

As I was out walking around the lake today I also saw all the vandalism that was talked about in the earlier post. Almost every light was broken out. I found several sprinkler heads broken off along the trail. There were garbage can lids broken off and thrown into the lake. I saw two outhouses tipped over, and several signs broken. In response to the earlier post, I think that the cost of maintenance should be spread out through the city. Why should we as residents, pay for all the vandalism done by the punks that don’t even live here. If Kennecott and the city cannot control this vandalism, I am afraid that the residents will take it into their own hands, and I am sure that Kennecott does not want that publicity nightmare on their hands. According to the South Jordan Police Department, if we witness the occurrence of vandalism, we have the legal right to restrain and hold the vandals until the proper authorities arrive. Kennecott, the city, and we as residents of this beautiful city and community need to find a way to stop this vandalism before its to late.

The lake and surrounding areas are Kennecott's private property. They may be turned over to the city at some point, but it's not going to happen anytime soon. Turning the lake over to the city may make things much worse, but that's a discussion for another time. For now, Kennecott and the residents of Daybreak are the only ones on the hook for paying for these kinds of damages.

How sad the lights continue to be a target of vandalism, they are very costly and it is the HOA's (residents) responsibility to repair or replace. There is no option for cost sharing.

I have suggested webcams numerous times to community management as a means of security, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. Although I'd be afraid to see the cost of that type project managed by our HOA. They don't bother finding competitive bidding.

I have been suggesting web cams for 2 years...all over soda row, the parks, and the lake. You could have them on a network recording and storing 72 hrs worth of video per cam and then it would overwrite. This could be done for 5k-8k and would solve all these problems and is easy to set-up. Some of those in leadership positions are afraid of technology me thinks...

hummm, they will learn some day... and take girl's and my advise.
