Microchip in Trees? 14 Years, 11 Months ago

So we were out doing yard work today and a few of the trees lining the street in front of our house are not growing as quickly as the ones to the side. So we were checking it out and noticed a weird thing in the tree giving it some irritation. So my dad dug it out of the tree thinking either weird bug or someone shot a bebe into our tree. Come to find out it's a microchip and it's in all of our trees. I ran across the street and our neighbor has them too.
Have you heard of this? Is this something the nursery does to scan them easier when they were purchased? Did we do something bad by removing it? It was hurting my tree so it had to come out. Any thoughts on this. Check your tree. It almost looks like a glass eye or something like you find on stuffed animals and then when you pull it out it's a long microchip about an inch or so long and about 1/4 inch wide.
So weird.
Hopefully someone knows something about it~
Thanks,
Autumn

I don't know about the Microship and I will look when I get home. But about two months ago I did see some people out measuring the trees on my street and tagging them. Unfortunitely, they got away before I could ask them what they were up to!

I do not think the folks at KKL will be to happy to hear of your tree surgery. When you have too much money to spend you hire an outfit to micro chip all your trees so you can micro manage their growing and health.
This would have been a good topic in the last issue of Daybreak ads and stupid news that was sent out to every home owner.
Manage the trees so you can waste more paper ??? This is getting good !!

Opps, was this really a KKL thing? I think they should notify us for sure if it is. How are we supposed to know what those things are! It was almost scary, like why are all these things by my house and in my trees.
Should I call them if it is a KKL thing and tell them it was killing my tree. You should have seen it, it was ozzing out sap and there was a huge area around it that was discolored compared to the rest of the tree. Very sad for my tree, like a bullet wound. I don't know if I need to get them replaced now but I'd prefer to just leave my trees alone.

Yes, it's a KL thing. Much like everything else, the project wasn't communicated to the community. The chips are to monitor the health and growth of the trees.
If you see damage to the tree around the chip, Call the HOA ASAP. Homeowners are responsible for trees in the park strip and will be charged if they die and are replaced. Our chips were inserted while the trees were dormant, so no harm. It sounds like they waited to long and drilled you tree when it started to wake up.
Suggestions for healthy trees.
Do NOT trim branches other than suckers while your tree is leafing out(spring). Keep suckers trimmed at all times. Do NOT make major cuts to the tree until it's completly dormant, Jan/early Feb is a good time in this climate. Once the tree has leafed out for the year, clip off any dead wood. Dig grass away from tree to let water into roots. Don't weed wack the bark.

Oh man, after I saw what the chip was doing to my one tree I took them all out of the others. KL should have notified us, how were we supposed to know what those things were. I did call the HOA and the girl didn't know much so she was going to email someone and then call me. The first one we took out because we thought it was a bug, the second one we took out due to the damage, the rest because I didn't want my other trees to get hurt like the previous one.
Oh well, I'll just cross my fingers my trees grow good, even though 3 of them have always seemed a little more weak than the others and bloom out a month later than the rest.
