Written by Scoop
Friday, 05 December 2008 08:55
I wanted to let everyone that Brett Neilson has formed The Daybreak Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) which is comprised of volunteers, who are trained in disaster preparedness, basic first aid, small fire suppression, search and rescue operations as well as victim triage. Daybreak CERT exists to:
  • Coordinate and catalog volunteers in the Daybreak community
  • Educate friends and neighbors about disaster preparedness and the CERT program
  • Prepare and train for a variety of emergencies that could impact Daybreak
  • Coordinate with City Emergency Management and city based CERT program
  • Affiliate and work with other Daybreak groups and clubs to increase preparedness and awareness
The Daybreak community is comprised of over 7,500 residents (estimated 47,250 at build out) and 13,500 homes by 2020.  In addition there will be numerous parks and common areas and over 9,000,000 sq ft of office/retail space.  Having an established CERT within Daybreak will help to ensure the preparedness and sustainability of our community after a disaster.  If you are interested in learning more about the history and purpose of CERT please goto www.DaybreakCERT.com

Most South Jordan Schools NOT recycling thanks to a minor City of South Jordan code violation Print E-mail

I received an email this morning from a Daybreak Homeowner/Parent and what I was told was very disturbing. Apparently this parent was volunteering at Daybreak Elementary the other morning in her daughter’s classroom. Part of her tasks included removing a homework cover letter from each student's take home folder. At the end of her task she had a stack of 25+ papers. So she asked the teacher if she had a recycling bin in the classroom. The teacher’s response was "No. The school can't recycle anymore. We used to use the blue bins in the DCC parking lot. But Kennecott Land, "The Green Company" thought they were too ugly and had them removed. So now the school doesn't have recycling." So this parent opted to bring the papers home & put them in her recycling bin.
  .     .. .     ...
.
So I talked to all parties about this issue (KL, CCMC, City of South Jordan, & South Jordan School District) and found out that the City of South Jordan (NOT Kennecott Land) had the recycling bins removed from MOST of the Schools in South Jordan because of a minor code violation having to do with the Recycling bins requiring an enclosure, which most of the Schools in South Jordan did not have. The South Jordan School District told the City of South Jordan that they did not have the funding to pay for the required enclosures and asked for a temporary or permanent variance over a few years so funding could be secured to install the required enclosures, a request that was denied.
.
The South Jordan School District will be submitting a request next week to the City of South Jordan City Council and Planning Commission and I really hope the City of South Jordan this time grants the South Jordan School District a temporary variance for a few years so the funding can be secured. This would get the recycling bins back at the South Jordan Schools and would prove that the City of South Jordan is willing to work around certain hurdles in order to do what is right.  .      .     ....
Stay tuned…

100 year storm...twice in just over a year Print E-mail

Well here are some pics of the second, yes second, 100 year storm we were hit with last weeked. A lot of Daybreak Homeowners agian had their basements flooding and had to listen to their builder tell them it was a rare 100 year storm that won't happen again any time soon. It's quite apparent there's a combination of severe land drainage issues and irresponsible builders who rushed to build homes in the first phase to take advantage of the real estate boom of the time. Now with the mortgage crisis upon us, new home sales will certainly fall off. Maybe Kennecott will wake up and address the existing land issues rather than putting all of their attention on building the beautiful new phases...

Is the Qwest contract being renewed? Print E-mail

As some of you might be aware sore of might not be, Kennecott Land is in the process of negotiating a new contract with Qwest for the internet service that is provided via our HOA fees. Well the Qwest representative for Daybreak claims the contract has been renewed, however Kennecott Land says it has not and is still in process.

A lot of Daybreak Homeowners have had issues getting their internet set up and there have been numerous customer service issues with Qwest (I know about this first hand). One of the biggest issues that Daybreak Homeowners are running into is that when you call the Daybreak Qwest representative most of the time they get a voicemail and in about 90% of the situations I have heard about those Daybreak Homeowners who left message never got a single call back. One of the other issues Daybreak Homeowners are having is that when they call the 800 number for Qwest nobody at Qwest knows how to handle the Daybreak calls. The one thing that I do hear, which is good news, is that the Qwest on site person for Daybreak, his name is Jason, has been extremely helpful in most cases in helping Daybreak Homeowners.

Anyways, one of our Daybreak Homeowners Mr. Homer has done some research and sent this table of internet costs to Mr. Snyder at Kennecott Land (VP at Kennecott Land in charge of Daybreak) along with some questions which I have listed below. Once Mr. Homer hears back from Kennecott Land and shares his findings with me I will update this article with the answers provided from Kennecott Land.

Destination Homes: Warranty Issues Print E-mail

Is Destination Homes not honoring new home warranties in Daybreak? Over the past few years this is one of the most comment complaints that I hear about for Daybreak Homeowners. In most cases the issues are related to HVAC or flooding problems and I am told that unfortunately in most of the cases these situations have ended up in lawsuits by the Daybreak Homeowners against Destination Homes.

I personally know about this because I also have had issues with the HVAC in my Destination Home ever since I bought the home when it was brand new. It's extremely frustrating when Destination Homes sends their warranty representative to your home and  having to sit there and listen to them lie to your face over and over again. I had two other HVAC companies come to my home and do an inspection of the HVAC in my home and they both found many problems. The first problem they found is that the HVAC unit that came with my home was not powerful enough to support my home, due to the square footage and layout of my home. The other main problem they found in my home is that the HVAC flex pipe used in the attic of my house was only 6" and the industry standard is 8", they also noticed that there was about 30-50 feet of slack in the pipe in the attic that was contributing to the problems. Needless to say Destiantion Homes refused to fix any of the HVAC issues that are in my home (there were more than the two major issues I mentioned) and as I mentioned above in my situation Destination Homes resorted to flat lying to justify them not fixing the HVAC problems, because in order to fix the HVAC problems it meant Destination Homes was going to have to pay between $8,000 to $10,000 to fix the problems (basically due the HVAC how it should have been in the first place). Anyways, I wanted to let you know the details on what happen in my dealings with Destination Homes on the HVAC issues I am having and just in case you are wondering, no I have not decided on whether to file a lawsuit against Destination Homes, yet...
